Ohio is currently in a transition period regarding cannabis laws. Residents are allowed to grow up to six mature cannabis plants per adult in a household, but smoking cannabis is still not permitted. Additionally, the rollout for non-medical residents to purchase adult-use cannabis products from licensed dispensaries has been slow.
What’s Happening?
Although Issue 2’s passage opened the door for adult-use and home grow in Ohio, only the home grow portion has been fully implemented. The state has not yet officially announced when purchasing adult-use cannabis products from licensed dispensaries will begin.
From current information, operational dispensaries will be allowed to transition to adult-use sales once they receive updated licenses from the state. Even after this transition, the program will still follow the original medical program’s rules for now.
What Does This Mean?
- Product Consistency: The products sold, including sizes and potency restrictions, will remain the same (e.g., 2.83g flower sizes, 77% THC cap for concentrates/vapes).
- Purchasing Limits: Non-medical patients can buy up to a 10-day supply per day. Medical patients will retain access to their 45-day supply in addition to the 10-day supply per day allowed for adult-use.
- Smoking Products: As we are still under the medical program’s rules, smoking products like pre-rolls are not yet available.
When Will Pre-Rolls Be Available?
We expect the final rules to be established around September 2024. Once the official rules are released, we will provide more definitive guidance on the availability of smoking products like pre-rolls.
Stay tuned for updates as we navigate this transition period and look forward to the full implementation of adult-use cannabis sales in Ohio.
